about

This Song is part of an Oud Suite of 4 compositions that go together and one day i hope to record them that way. Here its played standalone in a trio setting with Dan Kurfirst-drums/prec. and Ryan Snow-Trombone. First i have to say Ryan is amazing just to play this melody down on the trombone the way he did. The title comes from learning that in some ancient cultures it was believed demons can only travel in straight lines and so many time entrances to buildings, gardens, homes and teahouses were made a zigzag to keep the malevolent spirits out. A zigzag being a quality of vibration as everything is, and apparently one 'vibe' that keeps the demons at bay.

The Melody has a 3 part movement, the improvised section is a 4th and completely different spirit. So we race through the zigzag to the teahouse where we relax, open up and enjoy our tea in the company of good friends, good spirits; communication a freedom only respect and love of true equality provide. It's here we harmonize and reaffirm our dedication to life and each other. But then of course we must exit back out the zigzag into that demon mad world and bring these dedications with us to realize. Playing it trio like this really opens up a different tonal palette allowing Ryan's unique trombone colors to come through. + no demon vibes haha.
