Stepping Out of Circles

from Tomchess-Momentarily Endless by Tomchess

about

This composition was written in 2000. At the time i was focused on the Tenor Saxophone exploring the rhythm of breath and it's effects on melodic movement and modulation and this tune was written on the horn. At the same time i felt artistically as well as vitally, that is to say functionally i was continually moving, stepping out of the circles of my own creative intentions as new realizations in sound and life came through and i wanted to express that in sound. Here played on the oud i feel the composition has transcended it's beginnings and truly presents as a new world in sound thus stepping out of it's own circle haha. This is the only song on the Album to be recorded at The Brooklyn Navy yard in upright Bassist Will McEvoy's rehearsal studio there. This brings me to Will who when you listen i'm sure will agree has prodigious skills. I always like playing music with Will, he's empathetic and challenging at the same time and we have nurtured, developed and grown a musical language between us that i really like and is great fun to speak and i hope you will agree.
