Oud Taksim: Coverage

This is an Oud Improvisation based around my composition Coverage, which follows this track.

Traditionally Oud taksims (a word which means improvisation) are based on makam, or Maqam (arabic). A Makam is a grouping of tones similar to a tetrachord or trichord in western music but not. These are grouped into families and each has a particular melodic cadence or path of development with attendant sound signatures, modulations and resolutions.

My approach here and typically when i do taksims based on my compositions is thematic using the compositional material and melodic idea as the 'makam'. The notes choose the resonance in terms of emotions and emotional ambient temperament of the taksim, the way they are arranged focuses this even more and the spirit in which they are set in motion makes for the appearance of a certain expression and intent. The idea as with all good music is to get inside the sound, to be saturated with it's resonance of movement, it's message, to become it and to live it's meaning as it is, beyond the narrative of articulation. To quote a painter friend of mine Mehran Farahbakhsh : "...it's not meta-physical or a creation of lingual deficiency, the delusional paradigm, it is real." Being real it is naturally ineffable.

In the end we hope the sounds are healthy for your ears and hearts and that they are enjoyed in their purpose.
