about

I met Daniel Carter in the spring of 1998 through another iconic NYC musician and journey agent, guitarist On K'aa Davis who was playing in my free funk electric double quartet Bombpop (I have many recordings of this configuration lasting from 1997-2004 to be released in the not too distant future). On brought Daniel to an early rehearsal at my studio space in the infamous Music Building on 8th ave., and Daniel ended up playing with us at our first performance at The Collective Unconscious in downtown NYC a few weeks later.

Daniel and I have played many times together over the past 22 years in many different settings and i do have more than a few recordings burned into hard drives somewhere. But no duo recordings per se. We had talked of doing a duo recording for a number of years and now finally here it is.

But what can one say about someone who's had such a positive impact on underground free improvised music for such an extended time? if you know Daniel, you know Daniel haha, and if you don't know, check him out! His iconic sound like himself is warm, spiritual, quick, real, sly, humorous, uncanny, meditative, seeking, finding, transcending; always a dialog imbued with humanity, always accessible. For me he's the true patron saint of improvised music in NYC, and i say that with all respect. So to do this recording was a gift (check out cut #5 'Itself a Gift' one of my all-time favorites) and a spontaneous moment i'm grateful to have experienced.

From Daniel:

The music that comes through Tomchess inspires me to go to a stillness, a silence that can be heard, a stillness that can be felt to move, a stillness that gently, but surely, moves me to being out of control, in a most unnervingly, beneficial, unhinging, way, divinely inducing surrender, a willingness to be extinguished, making way for “something else”, letting oneself be taken out, by, and into, “the experience”, both actively and non-actively...modulatory potentials, revealing/announcing themselves, at every turn, with less than moment’s notice...What a deep great joy, privilege, honor, and blessing, having had this opportunity to play and record with Tom.

We hope you enjoy the sounds.

There are no overdubs, these are live studio recordings.
